One often hears it said, in Japan and in the West, that young people are not as well educated as they used to be. They do not write as well, nor do they read with as much speed and understanding. I am inclined to think that the matter should be started somewhat differently. It is not that they acquire less education than they once did. It is rather that the emphasis has changed.

上記の英文を読んでいて読み切れなかったため質問しました。この英文の They do not write as well, nor do they read with as much speed and understanding. はどのように訳出したら良いのでしょうか？また、as well と as much の文法的役割がよくわかりませんでした。as well は 「…もまた」の意味だと思ったのですが、そうすると後半の as much をどのように解釈したら良いのかわからなくなりました。as much 以下の比較対象はいったいどの部分なのでしょうか？


説明が下手でしかも幼稚な質問で大変申し訳ありませんが、英語が苦手でどうしても理解できないため、何卒ご教示お願い致します。

They do not write as well （as they did before)

彼らは、（以前に比べて）それほど読書が上手くない。

nor do they read with as much speed and understanding （as they did before).
そして、（以前に比べて）それほどのスピードと読解力で読書をすることもない。
