not only but alsoの文章の疑問

Not only do they provide a home for many animals, but they also protect the soil and prevent flooding.(森は多くの動物に住む場所を提供するだけでなく、土壌を保護し、洪水を防いでいる。)

この文章で疑問に思ったのですが、Not only の後のdoってどういう役割を果たしているのでしょうか？自分の考えではdoがなくても文章が通じると思ったので、疑問に思いました。

これは、not onlyが文頭にきたために、倒置法が適用された文です。

1. He was not only driving too fast, but also thinking of something else.
2. Not only was he driving too fast, but also was thinking of something else.
1の文は、not onlyが’文中にあって、普通の語順です。
しかし、２の場合、not onlyが文頭にあるため、その次の文が疑問文の語順になっています。
これが倒置法です。

Not only do they provide a home for many animals, but they also protect the soil and prevent flooding.
＝ They not only provide a home for many animals, but also protect the soil and prevent flooding. なら普通の語順です。

普通に書けば

They do not only provide a home for many animals but also protect the soil and prevent flooding.
を強調文としてNot oblyを前に持ってきたものです。
