強烈に難しいこの英文について，和訳に関してはもう完璧なのでどうでもよく，文頭における英文の「The greater the spread of the terrace and the factory, the office and the suburb, 」について，ここに，A and B, C and Dという不可解なand並列があります。わたくしめが学校で習ったことは，A, B, C and Dであります。

A and B, C and D はいわゆる，A及びB並びにC及びD(AとBの塊とCとDの塊)ということでしょうか。
こんな表現は，はたして一般的であるかどうかについておしえてくださいまし。

次の(1)が入試の問題文ですが、これはただ単に(2)を省略して簡単にしただけの文だと思います。
(1) The greater the spread of the terrace and the factory, the office and the suburb,
(2) The greater the spread of the terrace and the factory, the greater the spread of the office and the suburb,

ですので、「A and B, C and D はいわゆる，A及びB並びにC及びD(AとBの塊とCとDの塊)ということでしょうか」については、そのとおりだと思います。また、「一般的であるかどうか」については、とても一般的だと思います。
